Want to report on biodiversity?

Natur-Reporting (TNFD)
Many see nature loss as part of corporate social responsibility. However, it is increasingly becoming a financial risk. When forests disappear or rivers become polluted, it costs a lot of money.
This is where the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) comes in. It creates a framework for assessing and disclosing nature-related risks and opportunities.
Increasing relevance of nature reporting
In addition to climate change, biodiversity is becoming increasingly important for companies. This is reflected in the growing demand for information from regulators and investors. Here are a few examples:
- The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework requires companies to report on nature (Goal 15).
- The World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Risks Report 2025 shows that, after extreme weather, nature loss is ranked as the second-biggest long-term risk.
- The European Standards (ESRS) refer to the TNFD’s LEAP method. LEAP stands for “Locate, Evaluate, Assess, Prepare” and is a methodology for assessing nature-related risks and opportunities.
- The TNFD is relevant to the IFRS sustainability standards.
Useful tips for nature reporting
- Just get started. Initial steps such as a LEAP analysis can already make a big difference. Nature reporting can be expanded step by step.
- Use tools. There are helpful tools for assessing nature-related risks, including in the supply chain.
- Think locally, act globally. While CO₂ is a global phenomenon, biodiversity risks are local. Risks, dependencies, and impacts vary depending on location.
- Consider the financial implications. The move to financial metrics for nature risks is challenging. Even without figures in the first report, it is worth thinking about this early on. Initial approaches exist for damage costs in the event of natural hazards or for insurance.

Want to improve your sustainability communications?
Why is sustainability communication important?
Sustainability communication is important for solving environmental problems. It shows how we can conserve resources and live in harmony with nature. This is important for future generations so that they can enjoy a good quality of life. At the same time, we must preserve the freedom and progress of our economy.
When we understand how to protect the environment, we preserve its beauty. Positive communication about sustainability helps to create a world in which our children inherit a healthy environment. In short, sustainability communication shows us how we can work together to protect our environment without sacrificing freedom and progress.
Wortschmiede helps to improve sustainability communication by adapting the language and tone of messages to the audience and formulating messages in a way that is easy to understand and appealing.
